Advantages of Pallet Racking

Pallet Racking is a highly versatile industrial storage solution, with pallet rack systems coming in many different shapes and sizes to fit a business' unique needs. Some of the advantages of choosing pallet racking include...

Space Saving

Pallet Racks make efficient use of vertical space, which serves to maximize the storage capacity of a warehouse or storage facility.

Versatile & Customizable

Pallet racks are highly customizable to meet the specific needs of any warehouse or storage facility. For example, racking can be configured for high capacity applications, compact racking, racking supported mezzanines, or for LIFO and FIFO inventory control applications.

Easy Access

Pallet racking provides high accessibility to products regardless of configuration, which makes it easier to locate and retrieve items from storage.

Efficient Inventory Management

By providing a structured, modular inventory system, pallet racks enable easy tracking and monitoring of product, improving inventory management.

Adjustability

Pallet Rack Beams can be installed at different heights to accommodate products of various heights, shapes, and sizes, or even forklift traffic. With proper preparation, beams can be repositioned after installation to accommodate changing storage needs.

Structural Durability

For high capacity applications, Structural Pallet Rack provides the capacity for storage of even the heaviest loads, from heavy machine parts to masonry. With seismic racking footplates, your racking system can stand strong in locations with heavy seismic activity.

Long Lasting Durability

ASI carries both roll-formed pallet racking as well as structural pallet racking. Regardless of the style, powder coated stainless steel pallet racking is designed for long-lasting durability even in harsh & corrosive environments.

Pallet Rack Beam Styles

Alongside pallet rack uprights, pallet rack beams are the essential arms that keep your racking system held together. Their style determines many factors; Including installation procedure, load capacity, and accessory support. The three styles of pallet rack beam you're likely to encounter include...

Step Beams

Also known as Teardrop beams, step beams are the most common style of pallet rack beam found in warehouses today. A step beam's signature staircase shape is achieved by cold rolling steel into the appropriate shape; This is done to support a variety of racking accessories such as wire decking and pallet supports.

The iconic teardrop connector present on most step beams connects easily & securely into a teardrop upright without nuts & bolts, requiring only a mallet to fix into place. This ease of install makes a teardrop step beam the most popular choice for pallet racking.

Box Beams

Box Beams bridge the capacity gap between step beams & structural beams. The box shape of the beam provides greater surface area to support product, providing improved capacity vs. a pallet rack system constructed from step beams. However, being connected by nuts and bolts makes installation a more difficult, time consuming process.

Box beams are not usually found on new rack installs, as installation costs outweigh the costs savings between box beams and structural beams. Also, many manufacturers have stopped producing box beams altogether in favor of structural beams. In situations where high capacities or seismic activity are a concern, structural beams should be considered except in cases where you're expanding an existing box beam racking system.

Structural Beams

Heavy Duty, Steel C-Channel Pallet Rack Beams provide the greatest level of load support of the common pallet rack styles. Connecting to a structural upright using a nut & bolt connection, this style of pallet racking is more costly to install, but the most durable option & the best possible choice where seismic activity is a concern.

As the name implies, structural racking is capable of load-bearing applications, providing the end user great versatility. A rack-supported mezzanine with more storage or office space on the 2nd level is a great way to expand your usable floor space without costly new construction.

What To Consider Before Buying Pallet Rack

What Type Of Storage Do You Need?

Before investing in your pallet racking system, you should carefully consider the following:

  • Available Footprint: Assess your facility's dimensions including wall heights, available floor space, and obstructions such as columns or sprinkler systems that may affect rack placement. Knowing these details in advance helps streamline that rack design process and is crucial to calculating the number of pallet positions that will comfortably fit in your facility.
  • Type Of Products Being Stored: Consider the products you wish to store on your rack. How large are they? How much do they weigh? Are your products palletized? Pallet racking is most suitable for mass storage of palletized product, bulk containers, and IBC totes, to be loaded and unloaded by forklift, reach truck, or order picker. For other storage needs, a more suitable system may be an option. Our team of material handling specialists can help guide you to the appropriate system for your storage application starting with just a short phone call.
  • Throughput & Accessibility: How frequently are you accessing your rack? A basic selective pallet rack system offers moderate product throughput, moderate accessibility for lift trucks, and high storage density. For situations where high product turnover, dense forklift traffic, or other unique scenarios are a concern, specialized styles of pallet racking such as drive-in rack, pushback rack, and flow rack can optimize your rack storage to your unique situation.
  • Inventory Control Considerations: Are you storing perishable goods with rapid turnover times? If so, choosing to utilize First In, First Out, or FIFO inventory control helps prevent spoilage, and keeps product readily accessible for rapid picking. The most popular styles of FIFO racking today include Flow Rack and Drive-Through Racking. In scenarios where maximum product throughput & storage density are the top priority, a user may choose to utilize the Last In, First Out, or LIFO Inventory Control Method. With a LIFO Racking System such as Pushback Rack or Drive-In Rack, product is both loaded & unloaded from the front; Enabling large capacity, compact racking systems capable of high throughput even in small footprints.

What Is Your Budget?

Budget constraints are a central part of buying a material handling system. With pallet racking, costs can vary greatly based on the style and configuration of the racking, where it's being installed, and more. When planning your system, you should consider the following:

  • Service Life: High Quality, durable, steel pallet racking is designed for long-lasting service life. With a corrosion-resistant coating & the proper rack safety equipmnent such as column protectors, aisle guards, and guard rail, you can expect your pallet rack system to serve you for years to come whether new or used.
  • Installation & Maintenance Costs: The most important factor determining installation costs for pallet racking is the style of pallet rack being installed. Basic teardrop pallet rack installations are a simple process for a professional installer, requiring minimal tools and hardware. With nut & bolt style pallet racking systems such as structural racking, or for specialized pallet racking such as flow rack or seismic racking, the increased system complexity and hardware requirements lead to more manhours and therefore greater costs. This is why it's important to pick a skilled installation team who can work safely & efficiently. ASI's network of licensed racking installers have the experience to minimize costs and operational disruptions during your next racking install.
  • Tax Incentives: Pallet Racking equipment purchased at American Surplus may qualify your business to claim the Section 179 Deduction, helping you save even more money at tax time. You should account for these savings when seeking out price quotes from various dealerships.
  • Unbeatable ASI Savings: At ASI, you get the same high quality pallet racking you'd get from the manufacturer with none of the lead time and up to 60% off MSRP! Purchasing material handling equipment from a locally owned supplier like American Surplus can help make your next racking system more affordable.

About Pallet Racking

Pallet racks store materials on pallets in horizontal rows on multiple levels. Pallet racking requires the use of a lift truck such as a forklift, turret truck, or order picker to load and unload pallets onto the racks. All pallet racks, no matter the style, increase the storage density of your warehouse, retail outlet, distribution center, or any other storage facility.

At its most basic, pallet rack systems consist of crossbeams, uprights, and usually a deck made of wire mesh, corrugated sheet metal, or plywood. The beams are attached to the uprights through either a roll-formed teardrop connection built into the beam, or via a nut & bolt threaded through the upright in the case of structural racking. Each upright supports a beam connection on either side, allowing modular construction of more complex storage systems. This simple yet powerful design enables the user to store large quantities of palletized product in a compact space, build large, multi-level storage platforms, and more depending on their needs.

The versatile nature of pallet rack means there are many configurations to fit specific storage applications. A wide array of racking accessories are available to augment your racking system to handle specialized products, enforce inventory control strategies, improve safety & durability, and more. At ASI, we've been specializing in creating pallet racking systems since 1991. Our team has the experience to guide you to the best storage solution to meet your needs, whether that's a simple bay of racking or a sprawling pick module.

Pallet Racking Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Selective Pallet Rack?

The most common style of pallet rack, selective pallet rack, is designed for high-density warehouses that store a large variety of products. Selective rack provides 100% access to all pallet positions at all times without having to move other pallets. Based on cost per position, selective rack is the least expensive type of pallet rack. Selective rack is easy to install and easy to reconfigure should storage requirements change. While not as durable as structural steel pallet racking, rack safety equipment such as column protectors & guardrails can augment a rack's durability.

What Is Drive-In Rack?

Drive-In Pallet Rack is a narrow aisle storage system best suited for applications that utilize the Last-In, First Out (LIFO) method of inventory control. Pallets are stored back-to-back which creates a dense storage area. Drive-in rack is ideal for high-volume, low-SKU, & low product turnover applications.

What Is Pushback Rack?

Pushback pallet racking, much like drive-in rack, utilizes the LIFO method of inventory control. Pallets are stored on carts which move along rails. Unlike selective rack, which stores in a single pallet deep system, push-back racks often store pallets 2-5 deep, sometimes even more. When the first skid or pallet is picked, material behind gently rolls forward on rails. All levels are accessible individually to maximize accessibility.

What Is Pallet Flow Rack?

Pallet flow racking is a combination of elevated rails, wheels, and rollers integrated into a racking system to provide gravity-assisted product flow within your rack. Using First In, First Out (FIFO) inventory control, this style of racking eliminates forklift travel within the racking system, increasing product accessibility and providing a high-density racking system in a compact footprint.

Warehouses with minimal space are ideal for pallet flow rack, as aisle space can be reduced by as much as 75%!

What Is the Difference Between Pallet Racking & Industrial Shelving?

Industrial shelving is intended for non-palletized products, cartons, parts, tools, or other materials that will be loaded and picked by hand. These shelving units can be free-standing or bolted together. Pallet racks are heavy duty storage racks found in warehouses and big-box retailers such as Home Depot, Lowes, or Costco. Product is stored on pallets and loaded with a forklift or other powered industrial truck. Pallet rack is taller, wider, more durable, and higher capacity than shelving.

What Is the Standard Size For Pallet Rack?

The most common height for pallet rack frames is 16'. However, we have frames available from 8' all the way to 60' high. Depths range from 18"-72", with a 48"D frame accommodating most standard pallets, thereby being the most popular pallet rack depth. Pallet rack beams range in length from 4' to 16', with most common beams being between 8' and 12' long to accommodate 2 or 3 pallets per bay.

What Are Pallet Supports?

Pallet supports are used to reinforce a pallet rack system. Supports are installed inside the step of the crossbeams to provide extra stability for worry-free storage of heavy pallets. ASI recommends the use of two pallet supports per pallet position; They're the best insurance you'll ever purchase!

What Are Column Protectors?

Pallet rack column protectors are one of a variety of rack safety products designed to reduce the harm done by forklift impacts and other equipment collisions to your racking system. A serious forklift accident can cause catastrophic failure of your racking system. Outfitting your pallet rack with safety equipment such as column protectors, wall ties, and aisle guards protects your employees, product, and storage investment from serious harm. ASI recommends that every rack system be outfitted with column protectors to maximize workplace safety. Column protectors are available in 1 foot increments including 12", 24", 36", and 48" column protectors.

What Are The Different Types of Wire Decks For Pallet Racking?

There are three common styles of wire decking for pallet racks...

  1. Waterfall Wire Decking is the most popular style of wire deck. Also called Step Channel Wire Decks, this type of decking features a "waterfall" wrapping around the top of the beam for added stability while a U-shaped support channel rests inside the step of the beam.
  2. Flared Channel Wire Decking fits similar to standard waterfall decking. However, instead of the support channel resting inside the step of the beam, the end of the channel flares up over the top of the beam, further spreading the overall supported surface area. They are ideal for structural channel beams or box beams due to their universal design, but are also compatible with popular step beams.
  3. Instep Flush Wire Decking sits directly inside the step of the beam with no overhang around the front face. The major advantage of this style of wire deck is unobstructed visibility of identification labels on the front face of the beam.

Should I Use Particle Board or Plywood As Decking For My Pallet Rack?

American Surplus recommends that particle board or plywood decking should be avoided in most cases in favor of wire decking or an open-faced decking system such as PunchDeck. This is for a few reasons...

  1. Fire Safety: Plywood and Particle Board Decking isn't just flammable; As a closed face decking material, wood decking prevents your sprinkler system from fully penetrating your racking in an emergency; Allowing a fire to spread further and faster. This double fire hazard means that fire codes in many municipalities outright ban the use of plywood or particle board decking in pallet rack systems.
  2. Reduced Capacity: Plywood and Particle Board Decking does not support as much weight as purpose-built wire mesh decking or PunchDeck. Wood decking should only be used in light-duty pallet racking to prevent failure of the decking which could result in injury or damage to products.
  3. Reduced Lifespan: Plywood and Particle Board Decking degrade far more quickly than the corrosion-resistant materials used in wire decking or punchdeck. Repeated impacts, exposure to moisture, temperature swings, and other environmental factors negatively affect the longevity of wood decking, leading to frequent upkeep & replacement to maintain your racking system's overall safety.

What Are Row Spacers?

Pallet rack row spacers enforce a consistent amount of distance between two rows (aka runs) of pallet rack. Row spacers have a flange on each end which secures the spacer to the frame. Row spacers should be installed when there are multiple rows of continuous bays installed back-to-back to ensure the parallel installation of the racking, as well as to improve stability of the overall system. The recommended number of row spacers is as follows:

  • 4'-14' High Pallet Racking: 1 Row Spacer Per Pair of Pallet Rack Rows
  • 15'-24' High Pallet Racking: 2 Row Spacers Per Pair of Pallet Rack Rows
  • 25'-34' High Pallet Racking: 3 Row Spacers Per Pair of Pallet Rack Rows

What Are Wall Ties?

Pallet rack wall ties are one of a variety of rack safety products designed to maximize the stability of your pallet rack. Wall ties are designed to transfer forces from a rack system into a neighboring structural wall, playing a key role in preventing catastrophic incidents such as rack collapse, toppling, or displacement due to heavy loads, lateral forces, lift truck impacts, or seismic events. Outfitting your pallet rack with safety equipment such as wall ties, aisle guards, and column protectors safeguards your employees, product, and rack investment from serious harm.

Not every racking system necessarily requires wall ties. Their necessity depends on factors including rack height, load capacity, proximity to walls and other racks, and local regulations. Of course, the peace of mind that comes with the added stability pallet rack wall ties offer makes them well worth the investment.

What Is Pallet Rack Netting?

Pallet rack netting is a rack safety product used to protect your employees and your inventory. Rack netting is hung underneath a pallet rack system, preventing product that has fallen off the racks from making it all the way to ground. This protects your employees from potentially deadly falling products, and protects your inventory from shrinkage due to fall damage. Not every racking system requires safety netting depending on height, product weights, and local regulations; But as an inexpensive, effective safety measure it is well worth the small investment.

Do I Have To Anchor My Pallet Rack To The Floor?

Yes, you should always anchor your pallet rack to the floor. The footplates on your uprights offer specific locations to place your anchors, which are essential to prevent the entire rack system from falling over as well as for enforcing uniform aisle spacing.

How Do I Determine What Size & Style Of Pallet Racking I Need?

The first place to start is to know what you'll be storing and where you're storing it! Start by making a checklist and identifying the following details:

  • What Dimensions Are Your Pallets? (WxDxH)
  • How Much Does Your Product Weigh?
  • Is Your Inventory Perishable? Do You Have Other Inventory Control Concerns?
  • How Much Space Will Your Pallet Rack Have? What Are The Overall Dimensions?
  • Are There Columns Or Sprinklers Obstructing The Floor Plan / Vertical Space?

Once you know these basic details, you're ready to call a rack specialist at American Surplus who can assist you in designing the right racking system for your application.
