Why Does My Stretch Wrap Keep Tearing? Pallet Load Profiles & Your Stretch Wrapper

September 5, 2025

In the world of shipping and logistics, no two pallets are ever exactly alike. But did you know that wrapping them all the same way is costing you time, money, and product security? The key to efficient and effective stretch wrapping isn't a one-size-fits-all setting; it's understanding your pallet load profile.

Simply put, a load profile categorizes your pallet based on the uniformity of its horizontal and vertical edges. Choosing the right film and machine settings for each profile is the easiest way to optimize your operation.

Most loads can be sorted into three simple categories: Profile A, B, and C. Here’s how to identify them and exactly what that means for your stretch wrap.

Profile A: The Easy Load

What it looks like: This is the ideal, uniform load. Imagine a perfectly stacked pallet of identical boxes. Its footprint matches the pallet deck, and both its vertical and horizontal edges are straight and consistent. There are very few protruding edges or corners that can snag or puncture film.

How it impacts your wrapping: This is the easiest and most efficient load to wrap. You can use a standard-grade stretch film with confidence. Machine operation is straightforward—a standard spiral pattern with consistent tension will achieve excellent containment with minimal film use. The smooth, snag-free surfaces allow for high-speed wrapping and reduced film costs.

Profile B: Proceed With Caution

What it looks like: This load loses its perfect uniformity. The vertical and/or horizontal edges are irregular, think of mixed SKUs or interlocking patterns. The load may not even be the same size as the pallet deck itself. This irregularity introduces edges and corners that pose a potential risk for puncturing or tearing the stretch film.

How it impacts your wrapping: Profile B loads require a more strategic approach. A standard-grade film might be prone to tearing on sharper edges. It's wise to consider a higher-performance, puncture-resistant film. You may also need to adjust your machine settings: slightly increasing film tension to unitize the irregular shapes and adding a few extra wraps at critical points to ensure security and protect against film failure.

Profile C: Handle With Care!

What it looks like: This is the most challenging load type. No two Profile C loads are the same. They feature highly irregular vertical and horizontal profiles, often with significant protrusions, sharp metal edges, or unstable items. Every pallet presents a unique set of challenges for the stretch film.

How it impacts your wrapping: Profile C demands a specialized approach. A standard film will almost certainly fail. You must use a premium, high-performance stretch film engineered for durability and puncture resistance. Machine settings need careful attention: higher tension might be needed for stability, but a slower application speed is often necessary to allow the film to conform to complex shapes without snapping. For the most extreme C-loads, additional protective solutions like edge guards or top sheets may be required.

Breaking It Down

Knowing your load profile isn't just technical jargon, it's a practical tool for making smarter, more cost-effective decisions.

  • Profile A lets you maximize speed and minimize film costs
  • Profile B requires a balanced approach with tougher film and adjusted settings
  • Profile C demands a premium solution to prevent product damage and returns

By taking the time to categorize your load and apply the appropriate stretch film for the job, you can reduce film waste, prevent load failures, and ensure your products arrive safely. Equip your pickers and packers with knowledge of load profiles, and encourage them to optimize pallets to load profile A wherever possible. A well stacked pallet is easier on your budget and your employees!
